06 | Off-site optimization: Link building strategies

 <itunes:author>Jordan Kasteler</itunes:author>

Link building is the most important element in high search engine rankings. Search engines count links to your site as a popularity vote. Search engines have grown smarter in recognizing link patterns, linking profiles, deep-linking, one-way and reciprocal linking, etc.

Your links should be inbound one-way links with appropriate anchor text related to your site. They should also come from a site that's related to the theme of your Website or the link is devalued. Who you link to matters as well. If your site links out to link farms (sites that's only purpose is to host a large array of spam links) then you could be penalized for it.

I will explore in further detail:

-Benefits of link building
-Strategies to get links
- Good and bad links and how to tell (watching for NoFollow links)
- Who not to link to
- How to link properly
- Link value dependency (anchor text and positioning)
- PageRank leakage: should you worry?

05 | (audio only) Social Media Optimization and Marketing with Web 2.0

 <itunes:author>Jordan Kasteler</itunes:author>

The Web 2.0, term coined by O'Reilly publishing, is pretty broad. It ranges from the new wave of web design trends including liquid layouts, to Web development application services that act as desktop applications, to social media and user-controlled content, and so forth. My general focus will not be on the design or development aspects of Web 2.0, but the social media and user-controlled content aspect of it.

Some of the most visited sites on the Web are part of the new Web 2.0 era. These sites include: MySpace, YouTube, Digg, Delicious, Wikipedia, Flickr, etc. I will cover the top social Websites in various categories including: social search engines, multimedia related sites, blogs, bookmarking, social networking, news, podcasts, and more. I will also cover the benefits of being involved in the social Web.

01 | Who is Utah SEO Pro?

 <itunes:author>Jordan Kasteler</itunes:author>

My name is Jordan Kasteler and I've been involved with SEO for the past six years. My involvement has always been minimal on-page optimization stuff until the past two and a half years when I've really turned my focus to SEO. Currently, I work for a SEO firm in Utah called Utah Web Services (www.utahwebservices.com). Utah Web Services is a major player in Utah's SEO industry. With a collaborative effort we continue to satisfy our clients, and multiply their profits online through strategic search engine marketing.

Search continues to evolve vastly every day. The gaming tactics of search engines that worked years ago no longer work today. However, it is funny to see even though search has changed so much that some things still remain the same. Search engines are now more focused on providing the best ultimate experience for their users by providing the most relative results. We are starting to see search merge into the realm of user-behavior based results. Since humans are much better judges than crawlbots, we will start to see the social Web become more and more mainstream in regards to search.

My blog and podcast will primarily focus around white-hat (ethical) SEO practices. Grey-hat and black-hat SEO can be good means of providing great short-term results, but in the long run they will ultimately hurt not only your ranking but potentially your branding as well. My blog and podcast will also consist of education on the latest in search technology, news, optimization, and marketing. My main topics will be:
-	Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
-	Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
-	Social Media Optimization (SMO)
-	Social Media Marketing (SMM)
-	Usability
-	Accessibility
-	Web Design
-	Web Development
-	Information Architecture
-	Interaction Design

I feel that in order to really attack search engine optimization you must be an expert, or very familiar, with the all the topics listed above as well. I am always open to suggestions on how I can the podcast and blog. I invite my audience to email questions regarding SEO/M to Jordan@JordanKasteler.com and I will be happy to address them in my weekly podcast episodes.
